Mississippi Mills has created a new facebook group called “Mississippi Mills Staycation 2020” Recognizing that this will be a very different summer for everyone the town has come up with a plan! Each month they will post a new calendar, similar to the one below, which will list the activities that will be taking place each week.

In keeping with the Spirit of the Mississippi Mills Staycation…..here are some great staycation ideas for your family!

A hike and treat!

Take the family and head to High Lonesome Nature Reserve. This beautiful 200 acre property is located in the Pakenham Hills (867 Carbine Road, Pakenham) and is maintained by the Mississippi Mills Madawaska Land Trust. There are 8 km’s of trails and tons of wildlife! Bring a picnic and enjoy some time in nature with your family.

When you are headed back make sure to stop at Scoops in Pakenham Village (111 Waba Road) This is a major local treat destination that you simply cannot pass up! They have all of the things you would expect at an all service ice cream shop including handmade waffle cones to die for!

 Bike Ride and lunch!

Grab your bikes and head out on the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail for a morning bike ride. The library parking lot is a good place to park if you are headed towards Carleton Place on the trail. You and the kids will love seeing all of the birds, farmer’s fields and sometimes even beavers along the way. Once you hit Hwy 29 it’s time to head back to Almonte for lunch.

Pack up the bikes and head over to The Greene Mill (352 Ottawa Street). There is definitely something for everyone at this Almonte fave. They have just brought back their famous “Fried County Chicken Sandwich” which is delicious. Head to one of Almonte’s parks and enjoy your meal there!

A round of golf and afternoon stroll and shop

Golf courses are most definitely open and this can be a great thing to do with your spouse and/or kids! In Mississippi Mills there are a few to choose from. You’ve got Scottish Glen Golf Course (1994 Scotch Corners Road), Mississippi Golf Club (341 Wilson Street), Pakenham Highlands Golf Course (112 McWatty Road)…wherever you decide to go it will feel great to get active with your family!

Once you are finished your round, head downtown Almonte and enjoy the shops. Most are open with new guidelines in place to keep everyone sage. Whether you are into antiques or fashion there is definitely something for everyone!
